Quader Mahmud, a journalist and writer, arrived in Britain from Dhaka with his wife in 1973. He started writing in the 60s during the beginning of his career as a journalist. Mr Mahmud started his career in Britain with the BBC as a programme assistant for the BBC External Services. In 1976, he joined Janomot Newspaper as the chief editor where he expanded the literary and poetry segment of the publication to encourage more Bangladeshis to publish and promote their work. In the late 80s, he became the President of Bangla Shahitya Parishad. His first book was published in 1999 and since then has published over 30 books of poetry collections, short stories, essays on various subjects, fiction, translation books and children’s books. Mr Mahmud has translated majority of the Bengali poems into English for the Poetic East-End publication.
