Dolly Islam, a writer and poet, has been living in Britain since 1975. Her books on literature and poetry has been widely published in Bangladesh. Mrs Islam has been involved with the British Bangladeshi poetry cultural scene since the 70s. In 1984, she set up ‘Shahitya Parishad’, a Bengali literary organisation and whilst living in Cable Street, she also used her house as a space for young Bangladeshis to explore their poetic and musical talents. After arriving in Britain, Mrs Islam has worked as a Civil Servant and a teacher across Tower Hamlets. In 2002, she founded Kollan, an East London based charity serving the needs of local women.
